We will take a look at the big ideas in fourth grade math, with a focus on how you can help students with their homework and push their thinking. DGS 3RD ANNUAL CULTURE FESTIVAL
When: Thursday, September 29th

Where: DGS Cafe
What: DGS students and their families are invited to participate in a celebration of diversity and culture with a parade of nations, performances, and a delicious multicultural potluck.
All students are encouraged to walk behind a flag that they identify with for our new parade of nations, including that of the USA! We are also hoping families might bring a favorite cultural dish to share with the rest of the school. Forms to sign up for either of these opportunities will be sent home with your child today or can be printed from here.
In addition, if your family would like to share your cultural recipe, we will send home a recipe submission form. All of these forms can be turned into classroom teachers or ELA teachers (Mrs. Dawson, Mr. Acker, or Ms. Zendle) and will be included in a brand new DGS recipe book sold for face value in the spring.
We can't wait to celebrate and kick off another fantastic year with you and your family at one of the most highly anticipated events of the school year!
ALAS AT WINGS OVER THE ROCKIES

Where: Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum
What: Wings will be hosting ALAS—a special event celebrating opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for Latino families! This free event is designed for Latina and Latino students and their families to explore STEM careers in space and aviation. The day will include fun workshops, interesting speakers and demonstrations as well as a variety of make-and-take projects. Parents and students will walk away with a better understanding of careers in STEM and the aerospace industry. Click here to register.

What: Families of Mr. Romero's students, join me to learn more about how I am teaching reading and writing this year and what you can do to support your child in making the growth necessary to be ready for second grade. What: DGS community members, please come to either of our Family Forums on Wednesday, October 5th. We will meet in the middle school cottage from 4pm-5pm and then a second time from 5:30-6:30pm. In these meetings we will share news of our school including our exciting growth in state test scores and new school resources. We will also devote significant time to hear successes, questions and areas of concern from you, our community members. These meetings are a great way for DGS to connect with the community and have resulted in school improvements in the past such as increased Spanish Language offerings. Light snacks and childcare will be provided. Please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan on attending so we can plan accordingly.

PICK-UP NEEDED
Do you have a pickup truck? Would you like to put it to use to improve the DGS school gardens? Mr Potter and Mrs Lutz are looking for one kind truck owner who would be willing to haul some landscaping materials to the school. We are flexible about the time, but want to get this done in the next month. Can you find a couple hours to spare your truck? Email [email protected]. And thank you! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY FOR ESL
One of our amazing ESL teachers, Paula Zendle, is looking for 2-3 hours of volunteer time from a few parents. This time could be split into 30 minutes increments or whatever works for the volunteers. Two volunteers at the same would be ideal. The tasks she needs help with include: organizing books, cutting word cards for literacy intervention and making copies and scanning curriculum for literacy intervention. It would only take about 5 minutes for Mrs. Zendle to explain what to do and she would greatly appreciate the help. The parents who volunteer could do the tasks any day or time in the next two weeks. DGS BACKPACK PROGRAM NEEDS YOUR HELP
Each Friday Sandy picks up, sets up and delivers fresh food to DGS families in need. She needs our help to keep this wonderful program up and running throughout this school year! Every Friday we need volunteers to help transport the fresh food, set it up in the science room, pack bags for families and deliver bags to some families that do not have transportation. Please see volunteer slots by clicking here and for further details on dates, time frames and locations for the first semester of the 2016-2017 school year. Please note: When DGS Students do not have school on a Friday, there will be no fresh food deliveries. Thank you for your support!
GIRLS ON THE RUN IS SEARCHING FOR A VOLUNTEER COACH!
Girls on the Run is an after school running program with a social/emotional curriculum that support girls self-esteem and confidence. It's for girls in grades 3-5. I'm looking for a volunteer coach on Tuesdays or Thursdays or both days from 3:45-5:15. The start date is Sept. 13th and the program runs through beginning on November.
The curriculum and supplies are all provided and the program is a lot of fun to coach! I will run everything from an organizational/recruitment stand point, so don't worry about that! Email [email protected] if you have any questions! Thanks!

DGS classrooms are in need of room parents. A room parent is one of the best ways to communicate to all parents in your child's classroom about teacher announcements and needs, partner requests or updates and PTA announcements and volunteer requests.

Patxi's Cherry Creek is hosting a "52 weeks of giving" event for Sprout City Farms on Tuesday, September 27th from 11:00am-10:00pm! The DGS Community Farm is an acre of organically grown veggies, herbs, and flowers in the back corner of the schoolyard, and you're welcome to visit any time! Our gates are always open: please come in, walk on the grass pathways, and have a look around. We grow lots of food for the school and community (some is sold at reduced prices and some is donated), and host educational programs and community events throughout the year. We're looking forward to getting kids out on the farm again for classes this fall, and would love to meet their parents too! Farm Art "Paint Out" next Thursday night 9/22 from 5.30-8.30pm!
Join DGS mom and artist Annie Huggins at the farm for an evening of uninstructed plein air painting for all ages (kid friendly)—bring your own easel, paints & supplies; we’ll provide the view and a still-life, and will have some extra materials on hand (like watercolors for the kiddos). We'll get together to paint once a month on Thursdays from August to October, and at season’s end we’ll host a show of our creations! Next dates are 10/13 and 10/27.
Haunted Harvest Fest from 4-6pm on Monday 10/31!
Planning is underway for our annual celebration of Halloween and the harvest--let us know if you'd like to help put it together! This event is held on the farm after school on the day of Halloween, and is put together by neighborhood parents as a lead up to trick-or-treating. We'll have games and activities, a costume parade, cider, and more--stay tuned!

Come check out the farm stand in the school parking lot every Wednesday after school (3.30-6pm, from now til Halloween) for tasty farm-fresh veggies, fruit, flowers, eggs, and more! SNAP/EBT accepted, and those purchases are doubled in value! 4th and 6th graders help run the stand as a mini-internship program, and sales support our food access programs (including supporting the DGS Backpack Program/Fresh Food Center, DGS Cafeteria, and sponsored shares in our CSA food share program).
Regular drop-in Volunteer Days: every Friday and Saturday from 10am-12pm: come out to help with whatever's going on in the field, and bring a picnic lunch if you like. Kids of all ages are welcome!
