AMERICORPS NEEDS HELP
GOOD NEWS! DGS secured another Americorps team to help out at DGS for the next 12 weeks. They help DGS in so many ways, from literacy and math tutoring to helping teachers in the classroom. We are looking to give a little back to them. How can you help? Good question. The team is living in a church in Wheatridge, CO and we are trying to help the team feel at home while living in a church for 12 weeks. One way to do so is to get them to the gym for workouts. The Wheatridge Recreation Center is a great place where they can do just that. With your help, we can purchase punch passes for the team which will enable them to hit the gym for just $3 a visit. We have 12 Americorps volunteers and we would like to help them get to the gym a few times a week. Thus, we are collecting donations from the parent community to help make this happen. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated and you can drop them off at the office. Or pay via PayPal ([email protected]) or Venmo (Frank-Coyne) Every bit will help us help them and keep them happy working at DGS. ELA BREAKFAST AND COFFEE CONVERSATION DGS Families, please join us for the first joint ELA Breakfast and Coffee and Conversation of 2018! The ELA Team will be covering basic information regarding the ACCESS test and the PTA will be leading conversation around how to get involved at DGS. Denver developers are buying up land at a rapid clip and we need your help to ensure we can build future urban farms in order to grow the local food movement, protect remaining lands, keep communities strong, and continue getting kids outside to learn about food and farming! This letter is intended to better explain our 1st Trimester report cards. This report card covers standards we have assessed between the start of school and early November. There will be another report card in February (along with conferences) and a final report card in May.
Students are graded on a 1-4 scale based on end of year proficiency. This means that in order to score a 3, a student needs to show grade level mastery of that domain based on where we want them to be at the end of 3rd grade. Therefore, a score of 2 at this point in the year means that they are on track to score a 3 by the end of the year. A score of 1 means that the student is struggling in that area. In order to score a 4, a student must be performing an entire year ahead (ex. performing as a 4rd grader at this point in the year). The exception to this is if you see ‘final grade’ in the comments section under a particular grade. This means that we have covered that entire standard and will not return to it before the end of the year, so we expect the student to show mastery at this point and a 3 will mean proficient. Hello Families! We have just returned from our wonderful excursion at the Aquarium! It was truly a great day. The kids were able to go through the exhibits twice, once to build schema and the second time to complete their learning worksheets. We were so lucky to have so many chaperones join us! The kids were able to be in small groups and really take their time to show their learning. They moved from exhibit to exhibit when they needed to which gave them the chance to really dig into their work. The kids were incredible. They learned so much and really took their time, valuing the aquarium for the amazing excursion it is.
Some questions to ask at home tonight to hear about their learning would be:
As we look ahead we wanted to send a few updates. Friday is our Turkey day. We will be sending more information home tomorrow around expectations and joining us! It is one of our favorite days so we hope you are able to join us. Following Thanksgiving break we have our excursion to the Arsenal on December 13th. We hope you can join us! It’s an amazing day where we get to see bison in their habitats! On December 21st we will have Winter Day! Much like Turkey Day, this day is our chance to celebrate learning and enjoy spending time together. Again, if you are able to join, we’d love to have you!! Thank you again for all your support! The time is flying by already and we are constantly impressed by the growth your kids are making! Report cards will be coming home on Friday along with work packets if you requested one!! As always, if you have any questions, please reach out! 10/25 DEMONSTRATION NIGHT
